William “Hondo” Schneider joins Urgent Orthopedic Specialist after serving 35 years as a professional athletic trainer. Hondo was raised in Hondo, hence the name. He attended Texas Tech University receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Health in 1982, specializing in athletic training. He also received his Master’s Degree from Texas Tech in Sports Medicine in 1985.
During his professional career he has been employed by the NFL World Champion San Francisco 49’ers, the 1984 USFL Houston Gamblers, he served as the head athletic trainer and associate professor at Howard Payne University from 1985-1988, from 1988 to 1990 he was the head athletic trainer at Copperas Cove High School, since 1990, Hondo has resided and worked for Midland Independent School District. He served 18 years at Midland Senior High and 10 years at Midland Lee where he was fortunate to have served as the head athletic trainer for the three time state champion Lee Rebel football team.
Hondo has served on the Board of Directors of the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association, was a long time member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association. He currently is beginning his 17th year as the athletic trainer representative for the prestigious University Interscholastic League Medical Advisory Committee.
Hondo has delivered dozens of presentations to sports medicine clinics throughout Texas over the last 20 years. His favorite venue to speak at is the South Padre Athletic Trainers Sports Medicine Symposium; he has attended everyone since its inception in the late 90’s.
Hondo has received many awards, his favorites being the Everett Blackburn Outstanding Athletic Trainer award from the Fort Davis Sports Medicine Clinic and twice recipient of the Who’s Who Among America’s Teacher’s.
Hondo is married to Marla, and they have two children, Jessica, an attorney in Lubbock, and Brandt, a junior at Texas Tech University.
